New Year’s Resolutions

The New Year is just around the corner and that often means it is a great time to start fresh and set resolutions. Sadly, we often fail to achieve what we initially were so exited to begin and fizzle out before the end of January. I believe this happens for a few different reasons. I don’t belive we are lazy, just misguided by our perceptions and beliefs.

One reason we fail is because we often do not have clarity on what the goal is nor do we have a clear picture of what it looks like.  If you can’t see it you can’t be it. If you can dream it you can achieve it.  I suggest writing the goal and having a visual aid.  Since many people wish to lose weight I would suggest the goal be written something like this: I reduce weight to 125 lbs by April 1st to fit into my size 6 jeans and to be healthy and fit.  Now, the goal has to be realistic. Losing 1-2 pounds a week is plenty and body fat counts even more so keep that in mind . Also, not everyone is going to weigh 125 pounds or be a size 6 so keep it real.  Notice I wrote to be a size 6. This is a measurement of success as well as a visual aid for success.  Hang up the jeans you want to wear. Hang up pictures of yourself in that size. Imagine what you will feel like in those jeans and hold onto those emotions.  Also, notice I added “to be healthy and fit.” People are most successful when it has deep meaning for them.  No one is going to stick to something if it isn’t really what they want.  Always have an end date as well.  That is your success date!!!

The second reason I believe people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions is because they don’t take appropriate action. By this I mean they have planned unrealistic steps needed to achieve the goal nor do they have someone keeping then accountable.  You can go from not working out at all to going to the gym 5 times a week for an hour. That is not realistic nor is it even good for you.  You also can not go from eating chicken nuggets and french fries to cooking home cooked meals every night.  The stress you will put on yourself is trying to physically and emotionally do too much is harmful to your health. Set steps that work into your lifestyle and that can be life long.  You will have a lifetime of being fit and healthy this way. Write the steps needed to be successful. Write what you are going to do in your schedule just like it is a business meeting. This is a date with you.  It may be helpful to hire a personal trainer or life coach, especially on the beginning or if you have quit before you began in the past. You could also ask a friend or co-worker to make you accountable, or you use the buddy system to have a partner while you work out or someone to share cooking ideas with. You could even swap cooking nights and share meals with friends.

Everyone want to be successful and many people set New Year’s resolutions. This year keep your and be successful by following a few simple steps: have clarity and vision, be realistic in the goal as well as the steps your willing and able to take to achieve the goal, and asking for help either through a professional or a friend will support you in your quest for success.
